Thomas Grennan (born 8 June 1995) is an English singer and songwriter from Bedford and is based in London.[1] Grennan found fame as the guest vocalist on Chase & Status's "All Goes Wrong" in 2016. His debut album, Lighting Matches, was released in July 2018. The album peaked at number five on the UK Albums Chart and includes the single "Found What I've Been Looking For".
Grennan comes from an Irish family. He attended St Thomas More Upper School in Bedford. At the age of 18, he was attacked on the street and was left with four metal plates and screws in his jaw that "still hurt when winter comes".[2][3] He trained to become a professional footballer, playing for Luton Town for a while, also trying for Northampton Town and Aston Villa; he was later released. Grennan is a supporter of Manchester United.[4] He also worked briefly at Costa Coffee. He told Music Week: "I was close to playing over in the States but something was telling me not to and obviously it was the music".[5][6]

media convergence is a term that can refer to the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitalisation and computer networking
the advantages are that they are accessable from other forms of media instead of just radio. The BBC would get more views on their programs informing and entertaining. The advantage for vevo is that they get more views increasing the amount of views means the more money that you would get.
plurality = making sure there is different view points and making sure its fair for everyone

Live Lounge Appeal And Format
LO: To explore the format of the show and its appeals
the benefits of putting the same program on different radio stations are to increase the viewers which also increases the money made by the broadcasting service.
these specific creators are used because they can get the biggest audience possible by making them from different genders ethnicities ect meaning that they are diverse and they are also young so they can target their target audience which is the younger generation.
The live lounge is also the name of a room in the radio 1 studios
artists are filmed in an intimate radio studio, acoustically
often with little production rehersal
Uses and gratifications
Personal identity - relate to the presenters which are similar age
Information - background info about artist
Entertainment - enjoy live music
Social integration - people can discuss the info after the performance
convergence
1. bbc sports, cbbs, bbc bitesise
2. not many artists because they change the artists all the time
3. previous episodes from the past week , artists and popular news
live lounge has 3 days prep but normally they have over 2 weeks
6 professional singers

radio 1 producers
The live lounge appeals to the audience through the presenters for example these specific creators are used because they can get the biggest audience possible by making them from different genders ethnicities ect meaning that they are diverse and they are also young so they can target their target audience which is the younger generation. this ensures that the live lounge targets the younger audience because of the age of the presenters are 15 to 30 years old and if you were from ages 15 to 30 you would rather watch presenters that are similar age to you than presenters that are older and they can relate to the artist because of the slag used by the presenters for example "big up" and "that was sick bro" and the audience can relate to this because that is the type of language they use to talk to their friends so there is a comfort feeling and familiarity when watching BBC 1 . The live lounge fits to the bbc remit because it attracts a bigger audience and therefore making the BBC more money and a bigger audience meaning more fame and popularity.

supporting emerging artists :
it has done this by having people on the live lounge who not many people know but might be very popular in the future for example Holly Humberstone.
offers a range of music:
it has done this by making the artists unique and have their own style/genre of music for example Stormsy and Holly Humberstone and Ed Sheran
Question 1
1. BBC
2. OFcom
Question 1
a. horizontal integration
b. vertical integration
c. tv licenses
question 2
one way that the radio stations target their audiences are by using slang and informal language which target audience is from ages 15-29 an example of this is when the BBC Live Lounge one of the presenters said "big up" which the target audience can relate to because they use this type of language all the time
question 2
one way that the music radio stations meet the requirements for PSB is live music because live music is classed as informative and also entertains the audience which meets the tv requirements so the BBC can get their money
question 2
one way that radio audiences are passive are that they don't interact with the presenters they just watch the radio one way which makes them active is when they call in or interact with the presenters which is a good thing because then the presenters will never run out of things to say because there will always be a new story to talk about
question 3
BBC radio has to provide a wider range of content than commercial radio because the BBC need to fit the requirements of the remit which the government has set to try to make it so that the BBC don't make money from the live lounge and therefore they will have to shut it down due to them not making enough money to fund the live lounge which takes a lot of time preparation and money
we also get a wider range of content because in the remit it also says that they have to support upcoming emerging artists. and they also bring in viewers by adding popular artists who are already popular and a lot of people will recognise him which will make more and more people watch the live lounge if for example Stormsy was on the live lounge

Targets Q3: make points about how the bbc radio provide wider content on their radio stations, give examples on Radio 1 and why they have to do linked to the remit
target 15-29 year olds
support emerging artists
to inform educate ad entertain
BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several reasons. Firstly radio 1 provides a target audiences and one of them being 15-29 year olds This example is due to the remit and in particular the fact that radio 1 are required to target a variety of audiences due to the remits requirements.

And she doesn't give a damn about me
[Chorus]
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh
Her boyfriend's a dick
And he brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And he drives an IROC
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me
[Chorus]
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
[Verse 3]
Man, I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely
Lo and behold
She's walkin' over to me
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby
Come with me Friday, don't say maybe
I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'..
Teenage Dirtbag
Teenage Dirtbag is about The trend that was previously used for people to show their past fashion faux-pas, but now it's all about people exposing pictures of the slightly embarrassing yet nostalgic teenage versions of themselves. From Victoria Beckham to Paris Hilton - all the celebrities are jumping on the trend.
Sk8er Boi
The song is actually a story. its about a skater boy punk who liked a pretty girl who did ballet she was very different from him though she liked him too. but since her friends didn't like him she turned him down. Five years later, she is a single mother and he is a rockstar. promotes her image/identity through what she is wearing , shes also angry because at the end she smashed her guitar on a persons car.

1. Setting: it is set on a seaside town because a fish would look out of place in the middle of nowhere with no water
2. costumes:
3. lighting: dark low key lighting because
LO:
To examine the use of media language in music videos
Avril Lavigne and her friends are dressed like skaters this is achieved by using their costumes and their hair and makeup. this could suggest to the audience that the genre is skater rock.
In Avril Lavigne's music video, it is set in a city we know this as we are shown shots of tall skyscrapers and shots of the street. In my opinion the video is set here to add to the chaos because there is lots of people in the music video and chaos links to the punk/rock genre
the main character in teenage dirtbag wears a trapper hat which is a stereotype of a looser and he also is dressed very differently to everyone else which shows he is the odd one out
The music videos for Avril Lavigne's Sk8er boi and Wheatus' teenage dirtbag use setting an colour to achieve similar effects,. For example in Sk8er boi they are dressed up like rebellious teenagers and it is set in a urban location to show chaos which links back to the genre that is punk/rock, skater. In a Teenage Dirtbag the setting is a classic old school american high school we know this because of the lockers and the hallways in some scenes, it also uses stereotypes like the geek which wears a trapper hat and his clothing to show that he is the odd one out and is the stereotypical looser in an american high school. These are used effectively because they both tell you the genre of the music for example sk8er boi is a punk/rock.
CAMERAWORK
SHOT TYPE
ANGLE
MOVEMENT
Wednesday 8th March 2023
LO:
To explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in a music video
1. low angle
2. the camera is shot like this to emphasise the people on the children's cars/bikes and make them look bigger and to make it look more fun to the audience
3.the small toy cars links to mise-en-scene because they are props and her clothing also matches with her car and makes it look more childish and fun
1. The connotations are that it looks like she is in a desert with no people or water or food or trees anywhere around her which links to isolation
2.the artist might be singing about being alone
3.the artist might be singing about being alone because the wide shot shows us that there is no one around or anywhere near her
Naturalistic: teenage dirtbag
Expressionistic: sk8er boi
2. shot name: POV
why used?- to show the perspective of the audience when the skater girl is on the car
why used here? - to show us that she is the main character and the person that everyone is focusing on
3. shot name: extreme long shot
why used? - is used to show how lonley he is and it emphasises that by the shot type used
why used here? - to show us that he is the stereotypical high school looser
4. shot name: high angle
why used? - is used to show how many people are crowded round the car that she is standing on
why used here? - used to show that everyone is looking at her
5. shot name: low angle
why used? - is used to make them look bigger and stronger
why used here? - because they are the stereotypical high school popular people who are in the football team
6. shot name: dutch angle
why used? - is used to show how she is the centre of attention links to expressionistic cinematography style
why used here? -
there is lots of different camera angles and shots to show the expressionistic side of the music video and also the shakiness of the camera work shows te naturalistic and makes it feel like the audience is their with them
sk8er boi
1. energetic
2. fast
3. thrilling
4. chaotic
5. dramatic
Teenage dirtbag
1. smooth
2. still
3. slow
4. calm
5. natural
The camera movement in sk8er boi is expressionistic. for example at one point in the video there is a pov shot which shows Avril Lavigne on a car to show that she is the main character. The energetic camerawork fits the tone of the song because its very fast paced and there are lots of shots which show that the audience who are jumping around avril Lavigne and the song is very skater rock/punk.
The camrea movement in teenage dirtbag is naturalistic for example in the video
the music video producers in sk8er boi use camerawork to help construct the identity of the artist by using fast paced shots. They do this because it emphasises the chaotic, energetic nature of Avril Lavigne. for example it shows a high angle shot of Avril Lavigne on a car which the audience around her jumping up and down showing the energeticness of the music video.

LO: To explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in music videos
The 2 sound categories
diegetic, non-diegetic
diegetic- sounds that the characters inside the film cant hear like music
non diegetic- sounds that the characters inside the film can hear like voices
teenage dirtbag- only diegetic sound is the car hitting the bike and the bike falling over
they have used this to connect the narrative with the song
sk8er boi
cars
spray can
rope
police car
helicopter
smashing glass
the diegetic sounds are used to set the scene and very anti-establishment
editing
special effects
transitions
order of shots
continuity
shot duration
pace and rythm
both music videos use continuity editing
linear (continuity)
the order tells a story
non linear
out of order editing does not tell a narrative
sk8er boi- faster beat, faster cuts
teenage dirtbag - slower beat, longer cuts
One way that teenage dirtbag and sk8er boi differ from each other are the diegetic sounds. In teenage dirtbag they only use one peace of diegetic sound which is at the start of the music video a car crashes into the losers bike this is to help the narrative and show us that he is the "looser". In sk8er boi there is a lot of diegetic sounds to show us that the skaters in the music video are antiestablishment which is different to teenage dirtbag because teenage dirtbag used these sounds to set the scene

LO: To explore and practice exam style questions
4 mark question :
Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos
refer to two different music videos you have studied to support your answer
gender representations are presented in Avril Lavignes sk8er boi as stereotypical, for example when the boy is chasing avril lavigne with a camera she is made to be the prize. This is also similar to teenage dirtbag when the camrea slows down every time that she goes on camera. The connotations of this suggest that she is the prize and a stereotypical female stereotype.
10 mark question
Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos, refer to two music videos you have studied to support your answer.
stereotypes are used in music videos because they are easily recognisable and so help the audience understand the narrative. For example, in Avril Lavignes Sk8er Boi, they use stereotypical representation of males as active rule-breakers and interested in girls. This is shown through them often skating, biking or driving, often in places they shouldn't be (like on the roof tops), and filming the pretty girl in the car. This fits in with the teenage stereotypers also used. The teenage stereotype is represented as rebellious. For example in Sk8er Boi at the start of the music video we see them grafiting the walls of buildings and also we see them making large crowds of other teenagers in the middle of the road in a city where the traffic is very busy causing the police to be involved.
In Teenage Dirtbag stereotypes are used because they are easily recognisable therefore helping the narrative of the story and make it easy to understand for the viewer in about 3 minutes. Wheatus does this by creating the stereotypical american high school looser. Wheatus created this stereotype by making it so whenever the looser is on camera they always show a long shot or a zoomed out shot to show the audience that he has no friends and when he is sitting on the bench it shows that the bench he is sitting on has a sign above it saying looser. Another stereotype that Wheatus uses is the high school jock. This is shown because whenever he is on camera its the opposite of the looser, the camera crew will show low angles of him to make him look more powerful and they will show him with a lot of friends around him.
